1828: Mormon Prepper Life – Kim (Parrett) and Josh Coffin Pt. 1
Kim’s upbringing was fraught with fear, driven by intense preparations for the Second Coming. Themes of spiritual scrupulosity and the ominous echoes of evil spirits were deeply ingrained. Her father’s prepper mindset, financial exploitation, and extreme beliefs added to the tumult. Josh’s narrative exposes the suffocating expectations of righteousness and conditional love, culminating in his distressing mission experience and subsequent social rejection.
This candid conversation delves into the challenges and repercussions of rigid Mormon ideology, underscoring the profound impacts on individuals and families. The gripping insights shared here provide a raw and thought-provoking glimpse into the complex realities faced by many within the Mormon community.

Ok, I have to say that this was one of the most impactful Mormon Episodes for me personally. Can’t wait for part 2.
And kudos to Margi on this episode…..absolutely on top of her game her.
The stories of both Kim and Josh highlight some of the most problematic elements of mormon culture.
Josh’s story was particularly heart wrenching. The experience of non-RM (return missionary) Mormon men has received far too little attention. I can relate to a lot of what Josh said…..cultural and romantic rejection for not having served an “honorable full time mission”.
Josh’s offending mission president needs to repent and have Josh’s mission made whole.
Regardless of how Josh feels about the church now.
I subscribed to AVOW for a number of years, about 10. I bought all of Roger Young’s dreams and vision books. Some friends of mine bought the geodesic dome tent for $3,500 too pricey for me. I didn’t know Roger was getting a portion of the profits as he was pushing it heavily. The dreams mentioned the nylon tents would last as long as was needed, because of your faith.
I read the first Dreams & Visions in 2006. Over time more books were written with additional dreams. The dream or vision IS personal, and is for that person ONLY. Plus dreams are SYMBOLIC in meaning and not to be taken literally. That many people were getting similar dreams only shows that it was symbolism that people would understand.
Chad Daybell is a gifted writer who wrote historical fiction. Writing fictional novels around dreams and putting his interpretation into it. His publishing company, Spring Creek Books published the works of several authors. In my opinion when Chad was first asked to speak at a Prepper Fair, the instant fame boosted his ego to unparalleled heights. An average joe to a rock star. Fame is a beast that must be tamed or it can destroy you. In his case he developed a following, and at lunch time a gaggle of women ate lunch with him, and became the standard fare. Well you know the rest of the story.
Chad became the guru at AVOW and for an extra $5 you could read his fictional account of the future. He was held in high respect.
Poor Christopher has had to eat Crow a few times, its not a tasty treat. Chad abused him with the telling of half truths, loosing all trust.
Saddest part was allowing the police authorities access to AVOW, so the encryption was gone. Privacy was gone.
Fear is what sells products and I got tired of it all. If you had a spiritual post that was popular, you could expect Christopher to pack 10+ threads pushing products next to it.
I don’t believe in a call out, or tent cities. I do believe the symbolism of a tent city is starting over again in the knowledge of things hidden from us by government. The government does not want us to know that God exists, and hides all evidence of it from us. But because of the internet and whistleblowers, these truths are coming out. Jesus himself said in 3 Nephi 16:10 that when this Gentile church shall sin against my gospel and reject the fullness of my gospel, and shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts above all nations (who has the biggest Conference center of any church in the world) and shall be filled with all manner of lying (how much money does the church really have?) all manner of hypocrisy (safe and effective) murders, and priestcrafts (books written by apostles) and secret combinations…the church has fallen. And the eyes of the members are opening to the Raw Truth. The Church closed the temples and stopped the daily sacrifice.
Kim and Josh aren’t the exception, thousands are waking up to the abuse that is so pervasive throughout the church. Both mental and sexual abuse is merely covered over and whistleblower’s are excommunicated. Adultery is apparently ok, since they are not ex’ed anymore. (tongue in cheek)
Having no contact with an abuser allows healing to take place. It must be this way.
Kim and Josh, you didn’t leave the church, the apostate church left you. You are free from the guilt and shame church, the tool used to keep members in line. These times in the future will be known as “Tribulation”. Breaking free from the apostate church takes will power and great courage as every stratagem of shame is used against you. “Such as you are throwing away your forever family” My Jesus is one of love.
Boy, are these two people articulate and brilliantly insightful. Hats off to them. They should walk tall. Their gentle analysis of the link between mental health and vulnerability to doomsday pervaders is an extraordinary gift to all. They are in noble company. (Think Tara Westover and even Enough by Cassidy Hutchinson.)

I listened to the prepper episode. I hear the issues. And agree except this is not being a prepper issue, there are many people who prep that are not like that. I think this is a religious fanaticism in combination with the prepperism issue. I understand the issues. I just don’t like the whole community being painted in the same light
This has been so great to listen to. I’m on episode 2 and just need to say that a PPOCD TW is pretty needed. I’ve had/survived it 3 times as well as Kim and I admire and appreciate that she was able to speak candidly about it.
I just discovered this utube podcast. Love the factual and unedited bravery of these poor people! I lived in Tetonia, not a far distance from IF and Rexburg. I had no idea this was going on! I know you don’t like to say it, but I always knew LDS was a cult. I wasn’t as informed about the existence of blatant sexual abuse! I think all religions are hiding pedophiles and sexual abuses. Thank you to these two brave souls! I’ll defer checking out the utube channel!
Thank you Kim and Josh for taking me along on your journey to personhood and joy. Amazing and motivational. I was particularly impressed, in addition to your individual experiences, with your new blueprint for parenting. I identify with Kim finding her voice after leaving Mormonism. I was wrecked listening to Josh’s mission experience. I am appalled that he was treated so abysmally by this wealthy corporation. This corporation/cult has no heart, love or care. My father went on a Mormon mission in the late 1930’s, paid his own way, could only afford one meal a day, often slept 4 missionaries to a bed – when he had one, and borrowed trousers to wear while his only pair were being cleaned . . .
